About Dr. Rugemeleza Nshala

Dr. Rugemeleza Nshala is a Tanzanian lawyer, Executive Director and a co-founder of the Lawyers' Environmental Action Team (LEAT), a premier public interest environmental management and protection organization. He is the overall supervisor, the head of the organization, and the chief accounting officer for LEAT operations. He oversees the implementation of all programme and project activities and is directly answerable to LEAT’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Nshala holds a Juridical Science Doctor (S.J.D) and Masters of Laws (LL.M) degrees from Harvard Law School; a Masters of Environmental Management (MEM) from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies; and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) (Honors) University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Among many Dr. Nshala has researched and wrote extensively on legal and regulatory regimes governing the extractive industry in sub-Saharan Africa, taxation frameworks, land, and natural resources. He frequently gives lectures on international environmental law; extractive industry, climate change, wildlife and land laws, investment contract negotiation and renegotiation.
