LEAT Mwanza Branch Accomplishments

Since its inception, LEAT-Mwanza branch has been able to do the following:

  • To identify areas that are seriously polluted in the Region and ventured to take immediate action to alleviate the situation that include, legal action against violators creation of environmental awareness to communities;

  • To collaborate and cooperate with other like organizations in the region which are doing similar work, for purposes of creating synergies, uniting forces and strengthen environmental and natural resources campaigns. LEAT Mwanza branch has a close working relationship with ECOVIC (The east African communities' organization for management of Lake Victoria resources-Tanzania Chapter), VEFDA, ACORD, MES, MEC, etc.;

  • To review the existing environmental laws and by-laws in the area for purpose of identifying weaknesses and recommend for amendments. The report was submitted to the Mwanza City Council for further action;

  • To organize communities into small environmental groups and teach them the importance and benefits of preservation of the environment and natural resources. These communities include; Mkolani, Buhongwa, Bugogwa, Kenyatta Road, etc.;

  • To take legal action against Fish Processing factories and others in the region those have been discharging their untreated effluents directly into lake Victoria. The Plants include; TANPERCH Ltd, NILE PERCH Ltd and Mwanza Fishing Industries Ltd.;

  • To establish relationship with community members in the Mining areas in Geita, Kahama, Tarime and Nzega who have been relocated with no fair compensation, and therefore assisting to get their legal rights. In so doing communities members are taught their environmental laws and rights;

  • To work closely with the media in environmental law awareness campaigns. In particular it has been working with the Mwanza Press Club to publish articles of environmental law concern in their Newspaper;

  • It has managed to stop air pollution by a road construction company (ASTALD Spa) that was causing a lot of dust and health problems to the communities in Mwanza town, etc.
